Essential Oils Home Cleaning Solutions

Not only do essential oils smell wonderful but they’re becoming increasingly popular to use for home cleaning solutions. Many people are ditching their usual, often toxic shop bought cleaners, for green cleaning recipes that are kinder for you, your home, and the environment.

However, homemade cleaning products don’t tend to have any odour, and this is where essential oils come into play…

Why use essential oils when cleaning your home?

Many essential oils contain plant essences that are known to have antimicrobial properties that are ideal to tackle viruses, bacteria, and fungus. These powerful plant extracts have been used for thousands of years for their health, and emotionally uplifting properties.

It’s important to remember that when using essential oils you ensure they are always diluted in water, a carrier oil, or in a cleaning product that you’re making. As opposed to being used straight out of the bottle.

The citrus family of essential oils helps to break down grease and grime, so they make the perfect choice for using in home cleaning solutions for areas around the home that require a little more cleaning power. However, there are plenty of other oils that work their wonders too.
So if you’re ready to start making up your own cleaning solutions, what should you make a start with?

Aromatherapy Essential Oils uk made

Lemon

It’s hard not to like the scent of lemon around the home and it always leaves such a fresh and clean aroma. It’s known for being antiviral and also helps to cut through grease and it naturally disinfects and removes sticky, greasy substances. Lemon is also handy for brightening clothes and removing stains.

Try adding a few drops to a bucket of water when mopping your floors, or use it with your homemade detergent to brighten white clothes.
It also blends beautifully with basil, any other citrus fruit, vanilla, bergamot, ylang-ylang, rosemary, and peppermint. If you can’t find lemon, orange will help with degreasing (but not with the disinfecting).

Peppermint

There is no denying that mint is a refreshing scent and has the added bonus of having antibacterial properties. It’s great to use in a spray bottle for quickly cleaning down surfaces around the home. To make your own DIY spray cleaner, mix 60ml white vinegar and 400ml water together. Add up to 30 drops of essential oils and stir well.

Tea Tree

Tea tree is antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral – so it’s a pretty big deal when it comes to making home cleaning solutions. It’s multi-purpose and is perfect for using on kitchen surfaces as well as in the bathroom. It mixes nicely with bergamot, clary sage, clove bud, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, geranium, and rosemary – so you can really develop any aroma that you wish!

Lavender

Traditionally lavender is known for helping people drift off to sleep or to help calm nerves, but it’s also a great oil to add to your washing machine. Try adding a few drops to the detergent before putting on a load. It also helps prevent mould and mildew from building up.

It’s also a perfect essential oil to add to spray bottles to spritz around the home. It mixes well with many other oils including bergamot, peppermint, cedarwood, lemongrass, grapefruit, lime, orange, peppermint, rosemary, ylang-ylang and clary sage.
