How To Bathe Your Puppy

So you just got a gorgeous new puppy, and now you’re wondering how do you bathe this bundle of joy? You are not alone! Puppies require regular baths, but the tricky part is knowing when they need one. And most importantly how to introduce bathing your puppy correctly to ensure they enjoy having a bath.

Puppy skin;

  • Is very different from human skin
  • Needs special care at every stage of life.

At What Age can you Bathe your Puppy?

As a rule of thumb, you can start to bathe your puppy at 8 weeks of age. Although, it’s not advisable to bathe your puppy as soon as you bring them home. They need time to adjust to their new home and their new pet parent. Give them time to adjust to their new environment before putting them in the tub. Once they are happy and confident in their surroundings you can consider introducing them to bath time. Only use water at first and think about introducing shampoo once they are three months or older.

Know Your Puppy’s Fur Type

Puppies have different fur types; some need more frequent bathing than others. For example, a long-haired puppy with an oily coat will require bathing less often as they tend to release oils independently. In contrast, short-haired puppies can become smelly and tangled from accumulating dirt and debris over time.

Provide Your Puppy With Treats & Praise

To make sure your pup enjoys bath time as much as you do, try giving them a treat now and then. It will help them associate the experience with something good. Make sure your tone of voice is kind and gentle offering constant praise so they know they are safe.

Use Lukewarm Water, Shampoo, and Conditioner

It’s important to always use lukewarm water to bathe your puppy. It will prevent your pup from being too hot or cold, which can lead to respiratory problems and other health issues. Choose natural puppy shampoos that are PH balanced that way you will avoid irritating their delicate skin.

Avoid Bathing your Puppies Face

You need to be extra careful around the face, avoid putting shampoo around the nose, eyes, and ears. And be aware that as dogs ear canals are shaped like an L you need to avoid getting water in them. If water gets into the ear canals it can become trapped and possibly cause ear infections. So tread carefully around your pups face.

Be Gentle, Rinse and Dry

The first step in bathing your puppy is to be gentle, start with lukewarm water and a cloth. Once your pup has grown accustomed to this you can move on to the next step, this may take a few weeks for them to be happy. Next, you must wash each part of the dog’s body separately and then rinse off with water. Don’t scrub. Use a soft stream of water and gentle hand motions that move in the same direction your puppy’s hair grows. Once your puppy has accepted this stage you can then move on to using shampoo and conditioner if their fur requires it. Always rinse well, and rinse again to make sure all the shampoo is removed. Then wrap your pup in a towel and gently pat dry.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is best to bathe your puppy regularly. Bathing can irritate the pup’s skin, so the frequency will depend on what type of coat they have and how dirty they are. You must use gentle products, and we’ve listed some of our favourites below that we’ve used and know they are great for dogs from puppies to seniors.
