How Yoga Helps the Body

There are many reasons why people take up Yoga as it’s good for the mind, body and soul, but a lot of people don’t realise just how much Yoga helps the body and in all sorts of different ways. It won’t take long, but if you start practising Yoga, you’ll soon notice these benefits to your body.

It improves your flexibility

This is a rather obvious benefit of how Yoga helps the body, but it is one of the main benefits and can really help your body, so it’s worth mentioning. If you keep practising Yoga, you’ll soon notice a gradual loosening, and eventually, you’ll be able to do poses you never thought possible, you might even be able to touch your toes. With this, you’ll likely notice that aches and pains start to disappear too, which can only be a good thing.

It strengthens your muscles

Having strong muscles will help to protect you from things like arthritis and back pain; they also help to prevent falls as you get older as you will be stronger and less frail. Yoga is a great way to increase your muscle strength without putting too much strain on your muscles or putting yourself at risk of injury.

It helps with your posture

People with poor posture often suffer from back and neck pain as well as other muscle and joint problems. Not only is having pain uncomfortable and in some cases can be debilitating, but poor posture can also lead to degenerative arthritis of the spine. Practising yoga will improve your posture without you even realising it; you’ll soon be walking taller, standing stronger and looking and feeling more confident too.

It keeps your joints working

Because Yoga uses your whole body, each time you do it, your joints go through their full range of motion. Keeping your joints moving regularly can help to prevent degenerative arthritis, and Yoga is the perfect way to do this. It’s not too strenuous or too intimidating, it is something everyone can do, and it will make you feel great too.

It makes your bones healthier

Most people know that if you do weight-bearing exercises, then you will help to strengthen your bones, and this will help to ward off conditions such as osteoporosis. There are many postures in Yoga that require you lift your own weight and therefore will help to strengthen your bones.

Yoga gets your blood flowing

The relaxation exercises that you learn in yoga help with your circulation, especially in your hands and feet. When you practise Yoga, you get more oxygen to your cells, and this helps them to function better.

It increases your heart rate

When you get your heart rate up, you lower your risk of heart attack and this can also help with your mental health and can relieve depression. Even yoga exercises that don’t get your heart rate up very high can improve cardiovascular conditioning because studies have shown that practising Yoga lowers your resting heart rate, increases endurance, and can improve your maximum uptake of oxygen during exercise.
