Plastic Free Cleaning Tips

As the state of our environment continues on a decline, it has never been more important for everyone to do their bit. While a lot of us do the more obvious things such as recycling, using the car less, and trying to use less water, it is the less obvious ways that can make just as much of a difference. One simple swap to help avoid the levels of plastic in the sea continuing to rise is to switch to plastic-free cleaning. Here are some easy plastic-free cleaning tips you can easily achieve.

Use bicarbonate of soda when you can

Sometimes simple is best. Ditch your usual sprays and instead use bicarbonate of soda. It is a great cleaner and comes in a cardboard box that is much better for the environment than plastic. Bicarbonate of soda is a natural deodoriser and can be used for many home cleaning applications. It’s also great as a degreaser, you can use bicarbonate of soda to refresh a smelly fridge. Clean your oven, refresh carpets, you can even use bicarb to get rid of mildew in your bathroom.

Use natural and reusable cloths

Stop using single-use wipes in plastic packaging and instead switch to natural, reusable cloths that can be used time and time again. This is much better and less wasteful than other methods. You could also use an old t-shirt or piece of fabric that would otherwise get chucked away. This is a great way you can reduce single-use plastics in the home make sure you opt for natural fabrics over nylon and polyester materials. Try making your own paperless kitchen towels and cleaning wipes. I make my own wet wipes when cleaning my home with a mix of plastic-free cloths, white wine vinegar, water, and essential oils.

Change the way you use detergent

Get rid of plastic bottles and switch to natural cleaners such as lemon juice or remedies you can find online instead. You can use the bottles you already have to distribute these cleaners and it will save you from having to buy any more plastic going forward. Soap nuts are a fabulous eco-friendly alternative to washing clothes, I’ve been using them for years, I think they are amazing. No chemicals, no plastic and they save you a fortune as they can be reused a number of times.

These are just a few simple plastic-free cleaning tips that can help you on your quest to be more environmentally friendly. Need more inspiration check out our top selling eco-friendly plastic-free cleaning products……enjoy!

How to Use

Add 5-7 shells per load into a cotton bag or even an old sock and place inside your washing machine. You can even reuse the nuts up to four times before they’ve exhausted their cleaning power.

The gentle cleaning features of these nuts help in maintaining the colour of clothes longer. You can use the soap nuts for hand wash and machine wash effectively and they can be used for both white and coloured fabrics (between 30° and 90°). Because they are naturally sourced and hypoallergenic, they are the perfect alternative for people who are allergic to chemical detergents.

They do have a strong smell, however, this is not transferred to clothes when washed. As they are a completely natural product, they may differ in appearance and stickiness. If needed, they can be dried easily in natural sunshine for a few hours. Inside the bag, there will be a mix of whole and broken shells. There may also differ in colour due to the time of year the Soap nuts were harvested. This does not affect the efficiency of the Soap nuts.
