Jute is a natural fibre that is extracted from the bark of the jute vegetable plant and is the second most grown fibre after cotton. Mostly grown in South Asia the main species is Corchorus olitorius (white jute). Although Corchorus capsularis (tossa jute) is thought to be superior as it is softer and stronger than white jute. Jute is a rain fed crop and requires little or no fertiliser or pesticides, it grows three to 15 feet long before being harvested. The fibres are extracted by a process call retting before they are combed into long strings and then spun into yarn.
