Just like their humans, dogs can have food allergies. Indeed, one of the most common foodstuffs dogs can have allergies to is grain. The funny thing about a grain allergy is that it can take years to develop or seemingly appear overnight in your dog which can make it hard to diagnose.

What are the symptoms of grain allergies in dogs?

Not all dogs will experience all symptoms but be on the lookout for dry, flakey, or itchy red skin, inflamed paw pads, skin rashes or bumps as well as hair loss and excessive licking of feet and paws. Sometimes additional symptoms are present such as stomach upsets and ear infections that can become chronic.

Symptoms of Grain Allergies in Dogs

  1. Skin rashes or bumps.
  2. Chronic ear infections.
  3. Excessive licking/chewing of paws.
  4. Dry, flaky skin.
  5. Hair loss.
  6. Red Itchy skin.
  7. Stomach upset.

How to treat grain allergies in dogs?

The good news is that grain allergies in dogs are fairly simple to treat. The first step is to see your vet and get them to diagnose a grain allergy. This is crucial because dogs can have allergies to a range of substances such as mites or other foods like dairy and you will need to know exactly what to cut from their diet/ environment to heal them.
The next, and most important step is to eliminate all consumables in your dog’s life that contain grain. This should include their food and treats, and watch out for grains included in medication as well.

Concerning your dog’s diet, a grain-free diet is the best option. Although, it is worth noting that grain-free and gluten-free are not the same things. Indeed, gluten-free dog food may still contain some grains and so is not suitable for dogs with a grain allergy.
