Ways to Reduce your Carbon Footprint

Climate change is a situation that affects everyone. The damage our actions are doing to the Earth can be immense. Knowing how to tackle the issue of climate change to make changes to your daily habits is vital to ensure you are doing all you can to reduce your carbon footprint.

But first, what exactly is your carbon footprint? A person’s carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases generated by our individual actions. This includes carbon dioxide and methane too. The average carbon footprint in the UK per person is around 13 tonnes per person, with a global average of approximately 4.7 tonnes per person.

Reducing your carbon footprint can be done in many different ways. In this post, we take a look at some easy steps you can follow to reduce your carbon footprint.

Practise the 5 R’s

Reuse, recycle, refuse, reduce, and rot. Simply refuse to accept any single-use products such as plastics and all items designed to be immediately disposable, recycle everything you can. Reuse as much as possible to extend the lifespan of a product. And lastly, rot. Compost food leftovers or look at ways you can use or donate them – allotments can make great use of food scraps.

Driving

Or lack thereof. Reducing how much you drive is a straightforward and practical way to reduce your carbon footprint. Finding other greener ways to travel, such as by bicycle or walking, is better for the environment and your health.

If you need a vehicle, look at buying greener options. Choose makes and models that come in options such as hybrid or fully electric cars. You can even rent an electric car take a look at EVision Electric Vehicles they have an amazing range and all of their EVs are charged using solar panels to further help the environment!

Water Conservation

When it comes to water consumption, being as economical as possible can have a considerable impact on lowering your carbon footprint when combined with other efforts. Most people are aware of the easy ways of conserving water.

  • Choosing showers over baths and showering as quickly as possible uses less water.
  • Not washing dishes under constant running water as opposed to a full sink.
  • Turn the tap off when brushing teeth.
  • Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need, not filling it to the top every time.
  • Flush the toilet less. This will be different for each household but reduce water usage by limiting toilet flushes.

Eating Habits

Your eating habits can have a massive impact on your carbon footprint, and when it comes to reducing your carbon footprint via the food you eat, there are significant changes you can make.

Eat locally, freshly sourced produce. Head to farmers’ markets and eat in season. This will mean the food you buy has travelled less and will be fresher too, and you will also benefit by helping out the local economy by putting money back into farms in your local area. Cut down or even stop eating red meat. Take it one step further and consider becoming vegan to reduce your impact on the environment because of your dietary preferences.

As they say, every little does help. Once you start making small changes to reduce your carbon footprint, the bigger changes will then fall naturally in place.
