Rosemary Essential Oil is steam distilled from the flowers, stems and leaves of the rosemary herb. According to the British Pharmacopoeia, the finest oil comes from the flowering tops rather than the stems and leaves. However, most commercial production uses the entire plant.
This essential oil has a fresh, woody and herbal aroma. In aromatherapy, many people use it to refresh the senses and promote clear focus.
Uses of Rosemary Essential Oil
- You can add it to a diffuser or oil burner to create an energising atmosphere.
- Mix it with a carrier oil, such as almond, apricot kernel or hazelnut oil, for a stimulating massage.
- Apply it to the scalp (always diluted) as part of a hair care routine, since it is believed to support circulation.
- Add a few drops to warm bathwater for a cleansing and invigorating soak.
Important Guidance
Never take Rosemary Essential Oil internally. Avoid using it during pregnancy or if you live with high blood pressure or epilepsy.
Historical Background
Rosemary has a long cultural and historical tradition. In the ancient world, people valued it for its uplifting qualities and often associated it with memory and loyalty. Because of this, it became a symbol of fidelity and was present at weddings, funerals and religious ceremonies.
During weddings, hosts sometimes tied sprigs of rosemary with ribbons and gave them to guests as a sign of love and devotion. One of the earliest rosemary tonics, known as “Hungary Water,” was made by soaking fresh rosemary tops in wine. According to legend, it was created for the Queen of Hungary and brought her renewed vitality.
How to Use Essential Oils
- Diffusion: Add to an essential oil diffuser or oil burner to release its fragrance.
- Topical Application: Dilute with a carrier oil before applying to the skin.
