Reason You Should Change to a Solid Shampoo Bar

The rise of the humble shampoo bar is on the increase! There are many reasons you should change to using a solid shampoo bar on your hair. From an environmental point of view, you are reducing the use of single-use plastic. However, if sodium lauryl sulphate is a worry for you then a natural shampoo bar may also eradicate this. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) is a chemical that’s commonly used in soaps, shampoos, shower gels and toothpaste. It works as a surfactant, trapping oil and dirt so that it can be rinsed away with water. Surfactants are also used as a foaming agent………question is do you really need all that foam to clean your hair?

Many of us don’t feel completely clean unless we see loads of foam from our body wash and shampoos. However, the sulphates which are responsible for producing this foam can be harsh and drying. This can also be a problem if you suffer from skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and dry frizzy hair.

Shampoo bars can be used in one of two ways

  • First of all wet hair thoroughly
  • Gently rub the shampoo bar directly onto your hair from scalp to ends in a combing action.
  • Or rub the bar in your hands to lather and add the lather to your hair; using your fingers as a comb to work the length of your hair
  • Then rinse until your hair feels clean.

It can take time for your hair to adjust to a natural shampoo bar; short hair is easier to adjust. The most common spot for build-up, especially for people with long hair, is at the nape of the neck so make sure you rinse well here.

The difference between a shampoo bar’s clean and a bottled shampoo’s clean is astonishing and many people feel that difference right away.

If you are searching for a healthy alternative to bottled shampoo, all-natural shampoo bars are definitely the way to go!

Rinse and Conditioners

Sometimes you can have a build-up of soap if you don’t rinse your hair thoroughly.  You can make your own hair rinse with a simple solution of apple cider vinegar (ACV), water and essential oil of your choice. Experiment to find a dilution that works best for your hair type; dry hair likes less ACV and oily hair like more. Mix 1/2 to 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (ACV) with 200ml of water in a bottle, add 2-3 drops of essential oil; I use rosemary as it’s great for hair and scalp. Pour the mixture onto your hair and gently massage in; leave on for a couple of minutes then rinse off. This leaves my long hair soft and tangle-free!

You can also choose a plastic free conditioner bar to leave your hair soft and silky without the use of any harsh ingredients. These conditioner bars will last ages as a little goes a long way! I always recommend wiping the conditioner bar through the length of your hair avoiding the scalp. Just a couple of swipes to start with then gently massage in. You can add a little more if you feel the need, they simply rinse.
