Why Natural Body Lotions are good for Dry Skin

Your skin is the largest organ of the body so it makes sense to use natural body lotions if you want your skin to look and feel healthy. We often look at food labels to see what they are made of but many of us don’t check the ingredients we put on our skin. Did you know most products applied to your skin can be absorbed into your bloodstream in about 30 seconds?

Before we look into natural body lotions that can help you if your skin is dry. Let’s look at the skincare ingredients you could do with avoiding and also some of the reasons your skin can be dry.

Skincare Ingredients to avoid

Alcohol – often used to help skin care products penetrate the skin more easily. It can irritate the skin and leave it dry and flaky.

Formaldehyde – used as a preservative to prevent bacteria growth it is a known toxin that can cause skin irritation including, redness, scaling of the skin and breathing issues.

Mineral Oil – is a by-product of crude oil and is widely used due to the fact it’s cheap and never goes off. It’s used in moisturisers as a hydration ingredient, however it can clog your pores making acne conditions worse.

Petrolatum – used for its softening effects on dry skin in lip balms and body lotions, it creates a natural barrier to prevent water escaping whilst also preventing moisture from the air absorbing into the skin. This in turn dries your skin out causing the need for you to keep reapplying.

Parabens – are used as a preservative to keep skincare products germ free. They can cause skin irritations and are thought to be endocrine disrupters.

Phthalates – help skin care products to spread, they also help fragrances adhere to the skin and are also thought to be endocrine disrupters.

SLS AND SLES – often used as a surfactant to foam up and clean your skin, they are known skin irritant and can also strip your skin of moisture. Leaving it dry and irritated, this is especially bad if you suffer from eczema or psoriasis.

Reasons Why you Should Avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulphate

Common causes of skin dehydration

Many of us will look for dry skin remedies in the winter months; however, this condition can happen all year round and in adults of all ages. Dry skin is caused by several factors including ageing, genetics, hormones, stress, diet, lifestyle and environmental.

One of the most common causes of dry skin is dehydration, so drinking plenty of water will help keep your skin hydrated. Other factors that contribute to dry skin include using harsh products on your skin, hormonal changes, spending too much time in the sun, and environmental, such as air conditioning or indoor heating.

It’s important to understand that dry skin isn’t just an issue for women; men also experience this problem too.

Causes of Dry Skin

There are several different reasons why people develop dry skin.

Ageing is one factor. As we age, our bodies produce less oil, which makes our skin drier.

Genetics can play a role as well. If your parents have had issues with dry skin, you may inherit those genes.

Stress and lack of sleep can cause dry skin too. This occurs when the body produces too much cortisol, a hormone produced during times of stress. Stress has also been known to trigger psoriasis and cause eczema flare ups.

Diet plays a big part in dry skin. People who eat foods rich in vitamin C, D, E, K, and zinc tend to have healthier skin. Lifestyle choices such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can also affect a person’s skin.

Harsh chemicals used in soaps and shampoos can cause dry skin. These products strip away natural oils and leave the skin feeling dry. Instead, choose milder natural products that contain moisturizing ingredients.

Tips for Preventing Dry Skin

If you suffer from dry skin, there are some things you can do to help prevent it. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water helps keep the skin hydrated and prevents dehydration.

Eat a healthy balance diet and try to have the right amount of sleep.

You can also try using a humidifier at night. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, which helps to reduce the skin from drying out.

Use SPF daily when going outside. Wash your skin regularly. This will remove dirt and oil build-up that clogs up the pores. Use a gentle exfoliator and gentle cleansers as well as skin moisturizer. Try to avoid harsh chemicals in your skin care products.

Treating Dry Skin with Natural body lotions

There’s no need to buy expensive body lotions when there are so many natural alternatives available. These natural body lotions are perfect for dry skin. They contain ingredients like almond oil, avocado oil, Shea butter, mango butter and sunflower oil.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is made from the fats extracted from the nuts of the Shea tree. It’s high in vitamin A and E, which have strong antioxidant properties. Shea butter is also rich in fatty acids, and is easily absorbed into the skin. It works to form a barrier between your skin and the environment by holding moisture in and reduces the risk of dry skin.

Mango butter

Similar to Shea butter with its fatty acid profile and contains vitamin A and C . The vitamin C in mango butter helps to boost and brighten skin whilst the Vitamin A helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The rich texture of mango butter absorbs into the skin slowly forming a protective barrier whilst hydrating and soothing the skin.

Grape seed oil

Helps skin feel smooth and firm with its antioxidant properties to protect against free radicals. Packed with vitamin C and E that replenish lipids whilst the fatty acids in grape seed oil help moisturise and balance the skin and protect against free radicals.

Grape Seed Oil

Sweet almond oil
