Earth Hour Activities You can Easily Do

Are you taking part in earth hour this year and wondering what should you do; and are there any activities you can do whilst you’re sat in the dark. Or is this the first time you’ve heard of earth hour and you are wondering when is it and what’s the meaning behind earth hour? With these questions in mind let’s explore the reasons behind earth hour and how you can participate.

When is Earth hour?

Earth Hour is an annual event where people around the world switch off their lights for one hour in honour of showing their commitment to helping mother earth. It takes place on the last Saturday of March at 8.30pm and is an opportunity to take action and reflect on how you can help protect the planet.

Why is it called earth hour?

It was started in 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Sydney Australia as a call for people to come together and make a difference. Earth Hour is a powerful reminder of the potential we have to make a positive difference. By taking a stand and turning off our lights, we are sending a message to the world that we are united in our commitment to tackling climate change and protecting the environment.

Earth Hour activities you can easily do

There are many activities you can easily do during Earth Hour. One of the simplest is to turn off the lights in your home and spend the hour enjoying some quality time with the family. You can have a conversation, play a game, or read a book by candlelight — all without the need for electricity.

You can also spend the hour outdoors, exploring nature and appreciating the beauty of the world around us. Go for a walk and enjoy some fresh air, pick up rubbish in your neighbourhood, or go stargazing. Get in touch with the natural environment and appreciate the beauty of the world around us.

You can use Earth Hour as an opportunity to get informed and learn more about climate change and the environment. Read some books and articles, watch documentaries, or listen to podcasts. Learning more about the world around us will help us make informed decisions and help us understand the importance of protecting our planet.

Another great way to spend Earth Hour is to get creative and make something with your hands. You can use recycled and eco-friendly materials to create art, craft projects, or decorations. Or, you can use natural materials like leaves and twigs to make something special.

Earth Hour Activities with candles

Earth Hour activities you can do in the dark.

Enjoy a night-time picnic! You will probably want to prepare this in advance; once it hits 8.30pm spread a blanket on the living room floor light a candle and enjoy the spoils of your pre-made picnic!

If it’s a lovely clear night have a go at stargazing, you might want to arm yourself with a book about stars just so you know it’s definitely the Plough and not Orion. FYI the Plough is kind of a saucepan shape it has four stars that make up the pan and three stars forming a handle.

Exercise in the dark, or have a family press up competition like we did once. Admittedly I did not take part as I can’t do press ups at all! But we all laughed as apparently it’s more difficult in the dark…or so they say!

Earth Hour is a great opportunity to have some family time and show our commitment to the environment. Taking time to turn off the lights, enjoy nature, get creative, and learn more about the world around us will help us make a difference and protect our planet for future generations.
